FEA Terminology

FEA models are described by a set of Nodes. Nodes are characteristic points which are defined by their coordinates in space.

These Nodes are then connected by mathematical equations called Shape Functions.

Together with the Element Formulation (“element type”), the applicable Material Law (e.g. Law of Elasticity https://fea-solutions.co.uk/law-of-elasticity/), and the corresponding Material Properties (e.g. Elastic Modulus https://fea-solutions.co.uk/elastic-modulus/), these Nodes (“corner points”) and Shape Functions (“element edges”) are describing what is generally called a Finite Element.

An array of Finite Element corner points and edges is called a FE Mesh.
